Maintenance Art

1) I felt like I was actually doing something good for the CSULB campus.

2) I believe that the two pieces of art that we discussed in class are different because one of them is more of an aggressive action whereas the other one is more passive. However, I think that they are both art because in a way they show the two different sides of human behavior.

3) I wouldn’t say that Laderman’s picture was art however I do thing that her action in that photograph was something that can be seen as beautiful. If she was a janitor then I don’t think people would’ve seen that as art. I believe that art is something that is done with precision and generates a feeling out of someone.

4) I believe that art is everywhere. From the paintings in your house to the paintings one sees in museums.

5) I believe that women’s work is art, but only when someone takes a step back to appreciate the sincerity and genuine nature of a “woman’s role” in society.

6) If Kobe Bryant had a star, I would clean it.

Sustainable Art

I call it “The Essentials”

1) My idea was to get the most essential things I could find in my house which is water and food, but what I did was tape the waters into an hourglass so that it represents time. I added this because my grandma always tells me a saying “there is more time than life”, that quote has also become an essential part of my personal life.

2) Banana peel, lunchables, two water bottles and a salt lamp that I found.

3) I believe that my piece was able to express my idea.

4) I feel like my choice of materials makes it really relatable to whoever is observing it since they are materials that I am pretty sure are familiar and are common in some households.

5) A kiss should last for however long it takes for the heart to be satisfied.

6) A work of art shouldn’t ever be finite.

7) A marriage, at least back in the old days, should be till death do them apart.

8) I believe that human life is out of our control and you should never have the mentality of how long it should last, just continue to live life and grow as a person because you never know when your time will run out.

9) I feel like it does make a difference because if you know that something is finite and it will end, it makes you want to appreciate ,whatever it is, more. That mentality will probably lead to more positive than negative feelings in your experiences.

10) Those things like water and air, should depend on us and whether we choose to treat it right and with respect. If we don’t look after our planet and make sure we are doing our part, we will learn the hard way that sometimes things aren’t just given in life.

11) I would like to say that one person does have the ability to change the world and can make a difference, but the truth is that to make a change that big you are going to need a big group of people to help you out. So it is not about if you are willing to make a change, it is all about if people are willing to help you out and share the same passion.

Artist Conversation #5

  • Artist- Micol Hebron
  • Gallery- Zoom Room

Micol Hebron is an “interdisciplinary artist” who practices a lot of different things such as curating, writing, public-speaking etc. She is an Art Professor at Chapman University and most of her work seems to be more collaborative. She attend various Art events, in different places. She does road trips, meet ups, and is also involved with several “clubs or groups”.

Now, Hebron’s art is unlike anything I have ever seen before. It is just photography there is no painting, sculpting. They are pictures and every single one of them is different and sort of portrays a different emotion yet still deliver the same message in my opinion. They are usually big pictures with really shocking images that are being portrayed and that one would normally not consider art. They have either really bright or really dark colors and sometimes they even show some sort of editing that deals with her and the anatomy of her body.

What her work is saying is something way deeper than what it just seems to be. She started of by showing us pictures of nipples and I thought that it was pretty juvenile at first, she went on to say how Instagram had taken down the photos of a females nipples but when she cut out a male nipple and put it over the women’s nipples, that Instagram had allowed it. I thought that was actually really surprising on how even though they are kind of the same thing Instagram allowed the male’s nipples to stay online. I also wondered to myself why she would have a lot of pictures of herself nude and why she saw that as art, then she revealed how she had been sexually abused at a young age and how art was her way of expressing they way she would feel through that dark time in her life. I saw that as honorable and I understood that she was expressing herself in a different way with her work.

If I were to say something that I got from her artwork, it would probably be that there is definitely still gender inequality out there. She went through a number of times that her voice had been oppressed just because she was a female and how certain things that she did weren’t unacceptable, but when a male did them it was ok. I also appreciate her for telling us her backstory about why she explores the work she does. It was definitely an uncomfortable experience but I respect her reasons and motives for creating that work.

Internet Art Gallery

  • Theme Idea- More Than Meets the Eye
  • Artists- Eva and Franco Mattes, Joseph DeLappe, and Robert Lewis Booth

Theme Essay

The reason why I chose this theme is because I believe that when regular people look at artwork, they just try to focus on what they see rather than actually try to find the deeper or subliminal meanings behind the pieces themselves. The artists that I chose to talk about and put their artwork into my art gallery have caught my attention through their work because I like how there can be more than one reason for choosing to paint the artwork that they did. Whether it be a deeper meaning that symbolizes something about humanity and our struggles, or something that is just simply fun and amusing. Lastly, I believe that this can also apply in our daily lives. In our interactions and the things that we do, or the people that we are so quick to judge, we should always try to remember that there is always more than meets the eye.

These pieces by Joseph struck me in 2 different ways, in other words, got 2 different emotions out of me. The one on the left with the virtual reality makes me feel amazed at how amazing we are advancing in terms of technology and how essential it has become to us. However the AR-15 cardboard cutout on the right, is a sad reminder as to how violent and unthoughtful the human species can be. Especially here in the United States.

So the picture on the left really intrigued me because I have always believed that eyes are windows to the soul. Animals eyes in particular however are just something else, and they are different in their own way. Also a cat’s eyes are really cool to look at so that is why I really liked that piece, it fit in well with the whole “more than meets the eye” theme. The one on the right may look a bit confusing but the creators said that it is meant to symbolize how once yo see things you can’t “unsee” them. Also fit perfectly with my theme.

Now obviously as Americans, we all know who these two people are, MLK Jr. and Albert Einstein. Both amazing oil paintings, but when I saw this I thought about something different. I saw these two and immediately recognized them. Then I started thinking about how people around the world see these two and they might see just two ordinary men. Art can do that easily, it is all in the time, place, and the audience where the meaning of something can differ drastically. From where some people view these two as icons and others can simply see it as ordinary and feel no emotion for this piece. That being said I don’t know if that was what the artist was going for but that is what I got from it. This also fit with them theme because different eyes also shares different knowledge.

Vlogging

  1. The goal of my video was just to explain what I was doing this past weekend.
  2. I believe that I did accomplish my goal but looking back at the video I wish I wouldve actually shown my surroundings and what I was doing rather than just show my face for majority of time.
  3. Next time I would show my surroundings and edit it more.
  4. I don’t think I will vlog again.
  5. My favorite youtuber is probably KSI.
  6. Their work is really funny, and extremely spontaneous. At least it used to be.
  7. The lessons I can take from KSI’s vlogging is to always be yourself and to keep working hard at what you do.
  8. Authenticity is being genuine and comes from the heart.
  9. Performance is for show and is something that is practiced.
  10. I believe that they can co-exist. Something that is authentic, that you feel has to be shared more than once, later turns into a performance. That being said it is important to know when your performance starts to lose it’s roots in genuineness. It should always be real.
  11. I believe that they are both authentic because she seems to have the same kind of energy and personality. However, I do believe that the fact that the world is going to be watching her does have something to do with the way she is acting.

Drawing

I decided to do this with my 4 year old sister and it was really amusing. I gave her the instructions on how to hold the crayon and to close her eyes and then to just kind of move the crayon around. So we did this for about 3 minutes and it was relaxing for a while until she started moving the crayon faster and yelling at me for moving it too slow. But I’d say that our picture wasn’t that bad for a 4 and 19 year old collaboration.

Artist Conversation #4

  • Artist- Mahsa Soroudi
  • Exhibition- Nature’s Cadence
  • Media- Agriculture?
  • Gallery- Youtube

Mahsa Soroudi was born in Iran and she is an artist that has been living in California 7 years now. She was born into a moderate family that was not really disconnected from the culture. The work that I will be going over that she did is called Nature’s Cadence.

So something that I found really interesting is that her work involved physical plants and photography for the first time. This time I felt as if I actually had to pay more attention to the actual message of her work than the aesthetics themselves

Romantic Pop Song

Lyrics:

Life can be cruel but we gotta learn how to face it,
Sick of all this realism don't know if I can take it.
I'm trying to be more romantic if you know what I mean,
Who knows maybe I'll turn this life into a lucid dream.
You see life can get hard every once in a while,
Feels like we've come so far when we've barely covered a mile.
We shoot for the moon but we don't stop and notice the stars,
Always remember that its a beautiful type of pain lying within your scars.
Live every day of your life as if it was your last,
Don't get caught up in the future and don't get stuck in the past.
  1. I was trying to think about life and how difficult it can be to escape reality sometimes.
  2. Just to sit n complete silence and jot down the first words that popped into my head thinking about life and then go from there.
  3. It was hard as I expected, but the things/ideas that came into my head were definitely surprising. Some of it I actually thought was pretty good.
  4. I don’t think my song is that successful considering that it is really short.
  5. I have written songs before just to kind of get what I am feeling off of my chest so I don’t see the idea of writing another one in the future as far fetched.
  6. If I were to write another song it would probably be some type of rap song about whatever I am feeling at that moment in time. Could be sad or it could be a hype song.

Artist Conversation #3

  • Artist- Sienna Browne
  • Exhibition- Product of the Pallet
  • Media- Water Color, Casting, Projection
  • Gallery- Our classroom at CSULB
The Artist.
Some of her artwork.

Sienna Browne is an upcoming artist at CSULB, in fact she is actually going to be graaduating this year with a BFA in art. The experience with her was actually an improvement compared to past interactions with artists, as she came into class and talked about herself and her work. The work that she chooses to explore, although she never answered this directly, has to be her own emotions and the things that she is going through in real life. There is definitely a purpose in the work that she chooses to create.

Her work would be very warm and had a lot of color to them. There was a lot of detail and just by looking at them you could tell that there was a message trying to be portrayed through the artwork that she is creating. Some were harder to interpret then other but just based on the color alone would make you want to get closer to it and really start to analyze the painting and the meaning behind it. That being said, I was only able to see this art through a PowerPoint so I couldn’t say how exactly how big it was or what the texture looked like. However, I will say that seeing this art through a screen actually made me want to see it in real life.

So Sienna said something that I found really interesting and I imagined that I would never hear from an artist. She said that when she makes a piece she wants you to be attracted to it but at the same time be repulsed by it. Which is shocking to me because if you are repulsed by something than that obviously makes you not want to look at it, but as an artist wouldn’t you want people to be constantly looking at your work? Made me think a lot. I really liked however that she isn’t afraid to portray reality no matter how dark it is, whether it be hers or someone else’s, it is genius to me. Anyone that is willing to portray something real without fear of judgement of what others might think about it means that they feel strongly about whatever it is that is being portrayed. That deserves respect.

To me, Sienna’s work shows a lot of flexibility because she bases it off of what she is feeling and it is almost like her artwork tells her story. She definitely knows how to use the color to lure you into her piece. I really believe that she has a talent at expressing her reality but then also adding a twist of creativity to it, which is easier said than done. I applaud her for being genuine in her work, and I really appreciate that she was willing to take time out of her day to come to class and share her work with us

Counterfactual Identity

Before…
After…

I tried to take the appearance of a “typical gangster” but instead of doing this around campus I decided to pull up like this to my Church’s youth ministry group.

Their responses were actually pretty funny. They all kind of looked at me funny(the other kids in the pictures are my friends), and they were wondering why I had chosen to dress the way I did. The youth minister even said jokingly when I walked in “Woah man, we are a church group here take it easy”. Obviously joking…I think. But then after I told them why I was dressed like that it made sense to them that I didn’t actually dress like that casually.

Conclusion: I thought that this little experiment was pretty funny and amusing but only for a little while. Appearance definitely does play a huge part in how people interact with you in your day to day life because even from the time when I got out of my truck the looks I would get from certain people were a bit unusual. I didn’t mind this activity too much and I do hope that one day we as people can move past judging based off of appearance.
